Disgruntled Mary – an illustration

Well, with the help of my new bullet journal, this last week has been a fairly productive one! I’ve been working on this commission to illustrate a variation on ‘Mary Had A Little Lamb’.

I like the vibrancy of the watercolours, but I’m not sure on the composition and style. Being quite new to illustration, I feel like I have yet to develop a style, and it always annoys me when working on projects like this. I am much more used to realism, so using my imagination is very tricky!

I think the illustration needs to be contained by something, perhaps a border or illustrated frame to bring it all together and detract from the fact that the background is fairly sparse.

I haven’t yet finished though, but I’m not sure where to go from here. More detail needs adding but how?

Anyway, I’ll ponder on it a little more this week while I’m working on my other commission – a paper cut heart for a customer’s mum’s birthday.

I love how this is turning out so far – it makes me want to experiment with paper cutting further and come up with other designs for bespoke pieces.

I still have several things on my to-do list for this evening so I’d best get back to it! Ciao for now!

  1. Love the soft colors of the painting and Mary’s face–she has HAD it. I adore the cut outs–I’ve tried to do that a few times–I do not have the patience. Love it. I just started blogging and love when I find new art friends. Not sure how to follow here. xo
